A practical, hands-on workshop for artists, facilitators and cultural practitioners exploring
creative approaches to be more inclusive.
About this Event

Clearer Communication is a half-day, in-person workshop exploring how small, practical changes in communication can improve access and inclusion across arts, culture and community settings.

This session is built around real interaction and shared practice, rather than formal training or lectures. Through creative activities, guided demonstrations and discussion, participants will explore non-verbal, visual and embodied communication approaches that support clearer interaction with mixed-ability groups and audiences.

The workshop features contributions from experienced practitioners working across inclusive communication and creative practice. It forms part of a wider programme of access and inclusion activity commissioned by North East Lincolnshire Council, delivered in partnership with the Create North East Lincolnshire team. The programme supports artists, venues and cultural organisations to build more inclusive creative communities through shared learning, conversation and practical action.

Featured Contributors

Sarah Arthur – Licensed Makaton Tutor and Ambassador (Grimsby)

Sarah will offer a practical introduction to Makaton, a communication method that combines signs, symbols and speech to support understanding. The session will include a short taster demonstrating how simple signing and visual language can make everyday communication more accessible and introduce the opportunities available for training and integration into practice.

Jo Flanagan – Rise and Shine Theatre Company

Jo brings experience in inclusive performance and community-based creative workshops. Through playful, embodied activities, participants will explore movement, expression and participatory arts as tools for inclusive communication. Jo has extensive experience working with mixed ability groups to hold safe and creative spaces that allows every participants to express themselves and shine.
