Registration Deadline: 04/21/2025
Description:
The studio has some wonderful glazes, but the range of commercially available glazes is limitless. Have you considered using commercial glazes but don’t know where to start or have you tried them, but struggle getting the results seen on the bottle or on one of the many Facebook groups? If so, this class is for you. In one evening, we will cover three different techniques and strategies for achieving success.
What we will cover:
1. Bubble Glazing – While not actually a glaze, it is a very simple and interesting surface decoration technique. It works well with vertical as well as flat pieces. We will mix our own solutions in different colors to try.
2. Layering several glazes together and using a flux glaze to get them to move and blend on vertical pieces. Layering glazes together allows for reactive glazes to combine, flow, and produce many different colors that are not evident when used alone. This technique can be tricky so we will cover what to do and not to do to minimize the risks.
3. The original Frozen Pond Technique as developed by Kathy McGuire. This one is hugely popular and has taken the commercial glazing groups by storm. The studio will be purchasing the glazes for this one as it takes specific glazes to work properly. This technique was developed for flat pieces where layering reactive glazes is a challenge, like plates, but is also beautiful on vertical work, although the look is not quite the same.
Supplies:
The Art Center will be providing the following glazes:
Running Hot Chowder
Honey Flux
Iron Luster
Obsidian
Oatmeal
If you would like to use different glazes, you must purchase at least three commercial cone 5-6 glazes for layering; one must be a flux such as Amaco Oatmeal, Mayo light, or Dark Flux.
You must bring 3 bisqueware pieces ready to glaze.
You can visit Facebook groups such as Amaco 5-6 Glaze Forum, Mayco Mudroom Society, or Glaze Combos in order to get inspiration for your glazing project. All other materials will be provided. Please note that some glazes are difficult to find due to their popularity, so it is important to decide and order your materials as soon as possible.

About the Instructor:
Jeff Turner is a Texas native and a graduate of Flour Bluff High School, received a bachelor’s degree in geology from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and a master’s degree in geology from Baylor University. While filing out his degree plan, he discovered that a fine arts course was required to graduate and that’s where Jeff discovered his passion for ceramics. One class turned to several more and into a summer job before graduate school turning out pots for school funds. Life put a hold on ceramics for nearly 30 years and a career change brought him back to experiencing clay again. Jeff mostly produces functional ceramics on the wheel but is constantly exploring ways to push wheel throwing in whimsical and unexpected directions usually reserved for hand building or fusing thrown and hand building techniques. Jeff is a two-time winner of Best of Show at the Art Center Ceramics Show and teaches both wheel and hand building classes at the Art Center Corpus Christi.
