Clay Kirkland and Key on a Kite is an all-star group, featuring four distinguished members of the Swallow Hill Music school faculty.
Clay has been on the faculty for thirty years, and currently, as head of the virtual harmonica department, teaches from his Osceola, Missouri, apartment between trips to Denver to teach and perform. He is recipient of the Swallow Hill Distinguished Faculty Award and the Colorado Blues Society Lifetime Achievement Award. That must mean he’s getting kind of old. He still rocks big time.
Stef Kull, with a music degree from Metro, has taught hundreds, thousands of children to play piano. She has been pianist in the same church every Sunday for many years and has raised five beautiful, vibrant daughters. She led her own Doors tribute band, The Garage Doors. Gotta love that name.
Paul Trunko on guitar for many years led the open stage blues jam in the Little Bear in Evergreen, was a long-time member of the renowned Grateful Dead tribute band, Shakedown Street, and is father of three grown boys.
Chris “Citrus” Sauthoff is a world-traveled musician, having toured for fourteen years as a member of Parliament Funkadelic, led by the god-father of funk, George Clinton. It is hard to imagine on how many stages, in how many countries, and with how many of the world’s greatest musicians Citrus has performed. Add to that studying martial arts in Japan and sitar in India and you have another fascinating member of the Swallow Hill Music faculty.
On drums, Tony Pantelis has anchored the Queen City Jazz Band for many years and was a long time member of the Delta Sonics.
Ken Robinson on bass was a founding member of the hugely successful Eagles tribute band, The Long Run, and was a bedrock of Clay’s band for several years.
The band name, Key on a Kite, came from a song by Clay’s son, rap/rock musician, Luke, who produced Clay’s internet release, “The Conversation”.
