The Clay and Vintage fabric Animal Doll Workshop is an in immersion into your subconcious relationship with your animal soul - if you let clay lead you, a critter emerges that has something to say! A potent animal talisman!
Animals in clay are the oldest human-made sculpture and speak to our reverence and desire to be connected to our nature as animals. This is a class I have most often done with children and the results are always brilliant - Because we are all geniuses as children. I hope to guide you back to that childlike freedom and wonder, and let clay be clay.
What animal would you most like to make? And then what animal needs to come out? You should be able to make one or two pieces in the workshop.
This project offers a lot of flexibility for you to riff on the skills I teach, and make something totally unique. Clay and Fiber have a natural symbiosis - and you’ll be thrilled with what you can accomplish!
PLEASE READ FAQ BELOW BEFORE BOOKING.

First Workshop: 3 hours
We’ll be pinch building our animal heads, as well as feet, paws, shoes...any other ideas you have for your animals. We'll be decorating with pigmented clay underglazes in a wide variety colors. We’ll be working with a buff-colored clay with speckles, then fired to cone 6. I will be firing your pieces with a clear matte glaze. I’ll have stamps and texture tools to have a wide possibility for your pieces.
Our projects will be colorful but earthy, steering clear of the shiny look of “beginning ceramics”.
Second Workshop: 5 hours
You’ll get back your fired pieces, and we will sew the bodies out of vintage and reclaimed fabrics from my HUGE studio collection. If you have meaningful fabrics you'd like to use, please bring them.
• We'll be primarily hand-stiching (perfect for beginners to sewing), as well I have two sewing machines available if you have experience. I will be available to machine-sew parts for people who do not have experience.
• I'll teach you three simple embroidery techniques to embellish your piece with, if you so desire
• I'll have a huge selection of beads and other notions to embellish your piece
• I'll send you home with a needle and threads, and fabric scraps if you need to continue working on your pieces. These are pieces you could continue to embellish for weeks! True art works!

All tools and supplies are provided: Clay, underglazes, firing, fabric, threads, needles, beads and notions.
and sparkling water and wrapped snacks.
If you have a particular project in mind, wondeful! If not, I will be sending a Pinterest folder of ideas for you to begin thinking about.

Sadly, we cannot accommodate people who arrive late. During the summer, the doors are locked 10 minutes after, because we will be in the Studio Garden.
Demos start promptly at the start of class time. Due to the structure of class, demos cannot be re-done for late-comers without cutting things out of class for everyone.

The Garden Workshops are held in a small urban forest with towering heritage Douglas Fir trees, that create a cool and pleasant shade garden, even in the height of summer. MAY-SEPTEMBER
Workshops are held rain or shine, because there is a covered workshop and a festival tent.
OCTOBER-MAY Workshops are held inside my cozy studio in the trees with a woodfire stove!
