RICHARD STRAUSS An Alpine Symphony*

Matthias Pintscher is joined by Van Cliburn Competition Gold Medalist Yunchan Lim for an epic concert. The youngest winner in the competition’s history, Lim has performed all over the world, thrilling audiences with his assured technique and profound musicality. From intricate passages of great delicacy to thunderous chords, Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto provides a portrait of the great pianist/composer whose poetic brilliance expanded the limits of the instrument.

Carlos Simon writes music from the heart. The Kansas City Symphony commissioned this arrangement of Simon’s Warmth from Other Suns, inspired by the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Isabel Wilkerson describing African-Americans’ Great Migration seeking respite from the depredations of Jim Crow. Simon’s exquisite music expresses the duality of searching for rest yet being unable to call a place home.

Richard Strauss was inspired by a hugely memorable Alpine ascent to compose his Alpine Symphony. This monumental work requires a huge orchestra and we’ll pack the stage with musicians to depict the many incredible scenes along the climb. Enjoy the vistas and the fantastic soundscape!
