4:00 - 5:00pm: Kathak 101: Rhythm & Grace with Neela Zareen
Kathak 101: Rhythm & Grace offers an accessible introduction to Kathak, a North Indian classical dance tradition known for its expressive storytelling, intricate footwork, and elegant spins. In this one‑hour beginner class, students will learn simple footwork patterns, hand gestures, rhythmic syllables, and how rhythm and grace meet in the body. The atmosphere is welcoming and rooted in the joy of movement, giving newcomers a first feel for how Kathak blends rhythm, expression, and musicality. Please note that the dance is done barefoot, and participants are encouraged to wear long, flowing tunics with leggings or comfortable full-length pants underneath to experience a more traditional feel for the form. No prior dance experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore.
About Neela Zareen: Neela Zareen, a Queens‑based Indian classical dancer, trained in Kuchipudi with Guru Sadhana Paranji and in Kathak with Guru Prerana Deshpande. Her Jackson Heights school, Neela Dance Academy, promotes both forms via teaching and performing and is committed to connecting with the diverse communities of Queens and beyond.
5:00 - 6:00pm: Contemporary Dance with Robert Mark Dance
This highly physical class begins grounded, on the floor, with somatic and technical explorations that connect the spine, breath, and core. As class builds, dancers move through precise exercises designed to refine alignment, strengthen cross-body integration, and ignite full-bodied movement. The final phrase work pushes dynamic range and musicality, blending athleticism with fluidity.
About Robert Mark Dance: Choreographer and performer Robert Mark Burke (he/him) has worked with 10 Hairy Legs, Megan Williams Dance Projects, Pascal Rioult, among others and is currently a member of the Lucinda Childs Dance Company. An Astoria resident, he has taught professional and collegiate workshops including in South Africa and the Cayman Islands.
