Classical Hindustani Music Concert

A special concert will feature Dr. Dattatreya Velankar, a well-known exponent of Hindustani classical music. He will be accompanied by Shri Yogeesh Bhat and Dr. Shobha Dayal.

Dr. Dattatreya has been a senior disciple for more than 30 years of eminent classical vocalist Pundit Vinayak Torvi, who himself was trained by internationally famous artist Pundit Bhimsen Joshi. Dr. Dattatreya performs in India and internationally. He is affiliated with Learn Quest Academy of Music in Boston and visits the United States regularly to teach, perform and to lead workshops. This will be his fourth visit to Carbondale to perform.

Shri Yogeesh Bhat is a skilled percussionist and solo performer on Tabla, and he also accompanies senior artists on national and international stages.

Dr. Dayal, a Marion physician by profession and artist by passion, has been learning Hindustani classical music from Dr. Dattatreya. She performs on WDBX radio and local concerts. She will accompany the artists on Harmonium.

Dr. Dattatreya and Yogeesh Bhat will be performing on WDBX during Loy Addington’s show from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, April 26.

The concert will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. Doors open at 2:30.

Admission is free, but donations will be welcome.
