Messian's legendary piece was written after he was captured by the German army in June 1940 and imprisoned in Stalag VIII-A. Written on paper bartered from guards and performed on whatever instruments they had, its debut on 15 January 1941 was to an audience of 400 prisoners-of-war and guards.

As well as regular guest principal work with the Hallé and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Jane joined Northern Sinfonia in 2006, and was previously principal second at the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for four years.

Jane is also married to Gabriel Waite, who is also performing.

Gabriel Waite is Sub-Principal, Cello for Royal Northern Sinfonia.

Jessica was born in Chichester, West Sussex. She began to learn the clarinet aged nine whilst one of the first girl choristers at Salisbury Cathedral.

Jessica graduated from the Royal College of Music with a First Class Honours degree in 2004, where she studied with Janet Hilton, Michael Collins and Tim Lines. In 2005, Jessica gained her PGDip with distinction from the RCM where she was the Wilkins-Mackerras scholar and was supported by a full grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

After a busy freelance career in London working with the orchestra of the Royal Opera House, the London Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Jessica joined Royal Northern Sinfonia as Second Clarinet/Principal Bass Clarinet in September 2009.

Adam Johnson is a multi award-winning Conductor, Pianist and Composer.

Multi prize-winning pianist Adam Johnson was a Scholar and Junior Fellow at The Royal Northern College of Music UK, studying with Martin Roscoe and performing under the baton of Kent Nagano, Martyn Brabbins, and George Hurst, making his Concerto debut aged 15 playing Mozart Piano Concerto No. 15 at the Glinka Accademia, St. Petersburg, conducting from the piano.

Adam furthered his piano studies in London with Prof. Peter Feuchtwanger who has described him as in possession of 'an excellent technique and full of fantasy'.

Unique among the outstanding artists of his generation, Johnson is as equally at home conducting opera as he is fulfilling the role of soloist in concerto repertoire, playing chamber music, or directing his own large-scale compositions.

Adam has given recitals throughout the world including Istanbul, New York, Northern Spain, Norway, and Rio da Janiero, not to mention his demanding schedule in the UK. The composer Oliver Knussen has spoken of the 'extraordinary detail' of his performances.
