The Classic City Band of Athens Georgia will present their Fall Season Concert at UGA Hugh Hodgson Hall on October 23 at 3:00 PM.
The Classic City Band, with the most players in its near half-century history, returns to the Hodgson Hall concert stage for a diverse collection of pieces from America and abroad, incorporating both traditional, classical music and new works by living composers, showing connections with each other across the world and across time. The concert balances works by familiar composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Percy Grainger, and John Philip Sousa with works by up-and-coming composers
like Eva Fodor, Adrian B. Sims, and Hiroki Takahashi.
The Classic City Band of Athens, Georgia is the oldest continuously functioning community band in Georgia. Founded in 1976 for the purpose of preserving the rich cultural heritage of the American concert band, this non-profit organization gives free concerts throughout the year in Athens, Georgia and surrounding communities. The band repertoire includes a wide variety of styles, from marches to musicals, from pop music to classical and includes more traditional symphonic wind works to round out the offerings.
In addition to the symphonic band, the Classic City Band has other groups which perform for various groups and venues throughout Northeast Georgia, including Big Band Athens, Classic City DixieDawgs and the Classic City Polka Band.
Athens Mayor Heidi Davidson and the Athens Clarke-County Commission have issued a proclamation declaring the Classic City Band, “The Official Municipal Band of Athens”.
The Classic City Band is under the conducting baton of Michael Brewer.
Admission to the concert is FREE and a goodwill offering will be collected at the event. More information can be garnered at classiccityband.org
