Class: Swing and Gypsy Jazz Guitar(other instruments welcome)

Let’s get jamming on swing guitar and gypsy jazz!

This class will be for the student who wishes to learn the basics of swing and gypsy jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian. Taught by Tracy Kim, who has been teaching and playing this style for over 25 years.

Guitar will be the focus and used for demonstrations. However, All Instruments are welcome to join in! PDFs with TABS will be emailed to students and will be used for Guitar and Ukulele. Standard notation is included for all other instruments. Tracy will teach the melody and chords for each song and also discuss some easy soloing strategies demonstrated with Tracy's etudes.

This term is a special introduction to the swing style and also Gypsy Jazz- perfect for the beginner and a great review for the intermediate players. Each class is 75 minutes to give plenty of time to learn, practice and jam on the various songs taught each week. Tracy will teach the proper chord shapes for the song and style along with teaching the melody and some basic soloing ideas. Students will receive PDFs to print or bring on a tablet for class. The PDFs include standard notation and TABS(for guitar or ukulele)

This 6 week class is a great opportunity to learn and play with others. It will prepare you for jamming at swing and gypsy jazz jam sessions. BTW, Tracy has a monthly jam session at Hopworks every last Sunday of the month(students will be encouraged and invited to jam at that public show)

These songs have been hand selected by Tracy to demonstrate the various key concepts for improvisation in the style of Django Reinhardt and other swing players such as Charlie Christian.
