-- CLASS DESCRIPTION --
This class will play with being contained and being a container.
All levels welcome.
Our nervous system develops in utero, a container. It is our first home and doorway into the world. A neat thing about our world is the nesting doll design. Each entity is contained within a larger container. Even our galaxy. There are forces at play that create a sense of place and belonging. This sensation can be very helpful in a contact improv scenario because it may create permission to surrender to the unknown.
Class will start with floor, walls, and space as our container. Partner work will involve facilitated movement that traverses each person’s range of motion within their joints and social emotional self. There could be gains in range of motion where there had been holding. Or there could be a revelation of a holding pattern. Or there may be some other discovery all together. We will travel through flexion, extension, and rotation with containment.
My hope and aim for this class is to cultivate clarity and illumination of new movement possibilities. I consider the musculoskeletal system primary for this exploration but we will also bring curiosity to how our organs, fluids, and gravity influence our dance.
-- CLASS INSTRUCTOR --
Kandace Syer is a lifelong mover and learner. She is currently a developmental specialist working with young children as she studies to become a pediatric physical therapist. She began her practice of somatic inquiry at The School for Body-Mind Centering and continues through her love and practice of Contact Improv.
-- MUSIC --
Sometimes the jam will have some pre-recorded music, sometimes we'll make sounds ourselves and sometimes it will be silent. Classically, CI has been done in total silence, and even when there is music, the emphasis is not on how it "moves us".
Do you know of someone proficient in improvising music for movement? Send their info our way.
-- CLOTHING REQUEST --
* Bring 1 or 2 changes of clothes, if you are prone to saturating your clothes with sweat while dancing.
* Wear clothing that will keep your butt, genitals and nipples covered while moving in non-linear and unpredictable ways.
* Don't wear strong fragrances.
-- SPACE ACCESSIBILITY --
The movement space is on the 2nd floor, accessible by the stairs or via an elevator in the back of the building.
Anyone under age 18 is asked to attend with a guardian, and/or email us first to discuss.
