Artists enjoy painting in the golden hour because everything becomes progressively more interesting and exciting as shadows lengthen and one is forced to work quickly. Daily demonstrations in acrylic, oil, pastel, and watercolor will be short to allow students time to work.

On the first day we will meet at Kate Sessions Park, at 5115 Soledad Road in Pacific Beach, on the grass near to the entrance. Subsequent locations will be based on students’ preferences. Please note that there may be locations without immediate access to restroom facilities. Please plan ahead.

Since instruction is individual, artists of any level may participate and paint whatever type of scene they prefer. Class size is limited to 15.

MATERIALS: Students should bring their preferred media for this class. Only buy what you plan to use.

Pastel: Rembrandt, box of 90 or 180, or NuPastel, box of 96; Canson brand pastel paper #429, 426, or 431 (quartered); Masonite drawing board at least ¼” x 20” x 24”; paper towels; masking tape.

Oil: French easel or lap easel; stretched canvas or canvas board, up to 16” x 20”; brushes, #1, 2, 4, 6, 8 (two of each); odorless Gamsol thinner; small cup or jar; rags; small hand mirror; a warm and cool tube of at least seven colors: Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, as well as Ivory Black and Titanium White. Optional: Raw Umber, Scarlet Lake.

Acrylics: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters.

Watercolor: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters. Flat and/or pointed brushes, watercolor blocks or paper with clips, chair or easel, Kleenex.

Immediately after you register, look for a confirmation email and receipt from Eventbrite. In the week preceding the class start date, you will receive another email with more details.

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff continues to be our highest priority and as such, attendees for all Spring Session in-person Athenaeum’s School of the Arts classes and workshops will either need to be vaccinated or test negative for COVID-19. In addition, masks are highly recommended, but not required. See below for details:

Fully vaccinated students must present proof of vaccination to the instructor at the first class meeting. Acceptable proof of vaccination:

1.      the physical COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card issued at the time of vaccination;

2.      a photograph of the COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card; or

3.      a digital vaccination record (which can be obtained at )

Students who do not receive COVID-19 vaccinations due to medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs can attend classes and workshops but will be required to present the negative results of a COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of each class meeting. Tests other than PCR, such as a rapid test or over-the-counter test, will not be accepted.

Please note that our policy may change as new guidelines and recommendations become available.

Stay safe and be well! And thank you for your continued support of our school.
