About Dr. Cecilia Kang
Cecilia Kang is Associate Professor of Clarinet at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Praised for her “ethereal colors” and “effortless” virtuosity (The Clarinet Journal), she teaches and performs internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral clarinetist.
A recipient of numerous awards, including from the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM) Competition, New Music USA, Canadian Music Competition, Canada Council for the Arts, and the Louisiana Board of Regents, Dr. Kang’s study on Music Literacy won First Prize at the 2023 International Clarinet Association Research Competition and has been published in The Clarinet Journal.
Recognized for her inclusive and innovative teaching approach, Dr. Kang has presented over 100 master classes worldwide, including at the Milan Conservatory (Italy), Penderecki Academy of Music (Poland), National Taiwan University of Arts, Yonsei University (South Korea), Thailand International Clarinet Academy, Central Conservatory of Music (China), University of Toronto (Canada), San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Eastman School of Music, and Yale University. She is frequently invited as a featured guest artist at clarinet events and to present at the Midwest Clinic, Texas Music Educators Association Conference, College Music Society, and ClarinetFest hosted by the International Clarinet Association. Dr. Kang has also served as an adjudicator for the National Endowment for the Arts, International Clarinet Association, and Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition.
Beyond teaching and performing, she is known for curating community-based engagements connecting music with culture and community. During 2020-2021, she founded the Silver Linings Initiative, hosting 25 virtual panel discussions with leading clarinetists and educators during the pandemic, and in 2023, organized the Han and Heung Festival at Louisiana State University, celebrating the cultural resilience of the Korean and African American diasporas through music and dialogue.
In addition to serving as Indiana State Chair for the International Clarinet Association, she is artist faculty at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and the Buffet Crampon Summer Clarinet Academy. Cecilia Kang earned her degrees from the University of Michigan (D.M.A.), University of Southern California (M.M.), and the University of Toronto (B.M.), and is a Vandoren and Buffet Crampon Performing Artist Clinician. https://kangcecilia.com
