Clare Burhenne, Rutgers – Physical Properties and History of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds
**** WE WILL NOT BE OPENING THE CLASSROOM ****
Due to the high cases of Covid in our area, Ms. Burhenne will be joining us via Zoom and live steamed on YouTube. The Observatory Classroom will be CLOSED for this talk. This lecture will be hosted as a Webinar on Zoom as well as a live stream on our YouTube channel. We encourage you to participate, ask questions and be a part of the live meeting.

My talk will give a history of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, beginning when they were captured by the milky way up until the current epoch. I will describe the star formation history, dynamics, and morphology of the clouds and will discuss how each of the properties is affected by interactions between the pair of galaxies themselves and with our Milky Way. Ultimately, I will give sufficient background on the clouds to introduce the research I have done with my mentor, Professor Kristen McQuinn. I will describe how we determine the star formation histories (SFHs) of the clouds using multi-wavelength, photometric measurements of resolved stars and two different fitting techniques, BEAST (Gordon et al. 2015) and MATCH (Dolphin 2002) and how comparing the SFHs fits from each program will improve our understanding of star formation history algorithms and the Clouds. This will include a discussion of the photometric data used to derive these histories, SCYLLA.
Clare Burhenne is a PhD student at Rutgers University studying the star formation histories of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds under Professor Kristen McQuinn. She completed her bachelor’s degrees in physics and philosophy at Cornell University and is a longtime lover of the sky. Originally from Fairfield, CT, she and her family have been members of the Westport Astronomical Society for almost 10 years.
