The exhibition occupies the East Corridor Gallery through May 11.
The selected works on view span the last ten years of Robinson's painting practice, highlighting different shifts within the artist's own vernacular, and the appearance of recurring themes, such as time, racism, immigration, fitting in and self-worth as teenagers, and hunger. Their large scale, almost life size, accentuates the expressions of the subjects, as well as the narrative components that Robinson infuses into each painting through varied approaches to texture, mark-making, and collage. The use of strong colors and bold lines, combined with dynamic poses and exaggerations within the figures is striking, and results in artworks both still and impactful, yet full of life.
Romeo Robinson began his artistic career in New York City at the Germaine School of Photography in the late 1970s. After moving to Houston, he continued his studies at San Jacinto College, and later at the MFAH Glassell School of Art. There he was accepted into and completed the prestigious Block Program in 2019. Robinson's work has shown in Visual Art Alliance exhibitions, at the Carolyn Garcia Gallery, in the Houston City Wide African American Artists Exhibition, and the Houston Museum of African American Culture among others.
