About this Event

We in the contemporary United States are in many ways inheritors of political practices first developed by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Right now, however, these institutions feel more embattled and precarious than ever. The Greeks and Romans also dealt with political crises, and in doing so they found ways to come together, overcome division, channel political energies for the common good, and develop a set of shared civic virtues. This workshop will present a diversity of viewpoints about ancient Greek and Roman civics and foster dialogue with area teachers.
The program features four 30-minute talks, with a chance for questions and discussion following each one. There will be further time for getting to know each other and discussing best practices in the classroom during coffee breaks and a catered lunch. The speakers include faculty from Arizona State University and a visiting guest from the University of Virginia Department of Classics.
