Join artists, educators, art historians, and arts advocates for the Citizen Artist Summit, a weekend of workshops, talks, and community building, exploring the impact of federal arts funding and the ways artists shape civic life. Connect with participants across disciplines and consider how lessons from the past can help inform the future.
The summit is presented in conversation with the Citizen Artist exhibition. Throughout the weekend, artists, scholars, and cultural leaders will lead conversations, tours, and programs that explore the evolving role of artists in public life.

Citizen Artist Summit Weekend Itinerary:
Thursday, July 9 – Sculpture Garden Happy Hours: Citizen Artist Summit
5:00 pm – 7:30 pm
Join us as we launch the Citizen Artist Summit. Sculpture Garden Happy Hours are lively, relaxed evenings filled with music, creativity, and community. Enjoy live performances, a cash bar, local food trucks, Kaffeina Café, lawn games, and various arts and crafts vendors.
During the band’s break, co-curator Dorothy Fisher, Lynn Herrick Sharp Curatorial Fellow, will lead a gallery talk in Citizen Artist from 6:00 – 6:30 pm.
At 7:00 pm, we spotlight Photovoice citizen artists Anastasiia and Kateryna Vovchenko. In this moderated discussion, the sisters will reflect on their experiences as refugees and explore differences in arts access between Ukraine and the United States.

Friday, July 10 – New Deal Spotlight
10:30 am – 12:00 pm – New Deal: Art for Our Sake
Citizen Artist contributes to a rich tradition of historical scholarship about the artist programs of the New Deal. Listen to a panel of experts elevating new research about New Deal artist support in Delaware and nationwide. Panelists include Steven Leech, John P. Murphy, and Joanna Platt.
12:00 pm – 2:00 pm – Lunchtime Creative Break: Film Screening
Grab lunch and join us at 1pm for three short documentaries by Andre’ Wright, Jr., highlighting local citizen artistry through the work of painters Alim Smith and Oscar Eduardo de Paz as well as the participants of Citizen Photographer. A conversation between the filmmaker and de Paz will follow the screening.
2:00 pm – 3:30 pm – New Deal: Epilogue
The Delaware Art Museum is not the only institution exploring the legacy of our New Deal heritage. Exhibitions like Art/Work: Women Printmakers of the WPA and Blazing a Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters as well as initiatives like the Living New Deal bring materials from the past into contact with the present. Hear curators and scholars discuss the challenges and possibilities brought forward by working with New Deal materials in the 2020s. Panelists include Robin Owen Joyce, Mary Okin, and Mark Resnick.
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Delaware Historical Society Social
Head downtown to the Delaware Historical Society for drinks and discussion with Dr. Grouchy Greg Watkins and Tamara Burks to learn about the complex and vibrant histories of Delaware’s Rosedale Beach.

Saturday, July 11 – CETA Spotlight
8:30 am – 9:30 am – Wilmington Public Art Walking Tour
Meet us downtown to explore and discuss public art in the city of Wilmington.
10:30 am – 12:00 pm – CETA: Public Artist
Undertakings such as the CETA Arts Legacy Project and Citizen Artist have created opportunities to revisit and analyze this critical moment in American art history. Prominent scholars and historians of the emerging field of CETA history will share their research on performing and visual arts programs across the United States. Panelists include Molly Garfinkel, Colleen Hooper, Virginia Maksymowicz, Blaise Tobia, and Jodi Waynberg.
12:00 pm – 2:00 pm – Lunchtime Creative Break: Cyanotype Workshop and Gallery Tour
Come inspired by Photovoice and make your own cyanotype prints with Jon Cox, Associate Professor in the Depart of Art and Design at the University of Delaware. Then join a special artist-led tour of Citizen Artist featuring CETA artists Flash Rosenberg, Morris Brown II, and Carson Zullinger as they share their memories of federal funding in the 1970s.
2:00 pm – 3:30 pm – CETA: Epilogue
CETA programs took different forms as communities across the nation designed activities to meet their needs. Join past CETA artists from Delaware, New York, and Pennsylvania as they discuss their unique experiences and artist programs. Panelists include Norma Calabro, Charlie Clough and Bruce Katsiff.
4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – Native Artist Pathways Fellows Social
This inaugural 7-month program, founded by Rebecca “Little Turtle Who Sees” Jackson-Square, supports emerging Native and Indigenous artists in Delaware through monthly workshops, museum experiences, tribal land explorations, mentorship with Native elders and artists, community circles, and a culminating exhibition in 2027. Fellows will share their creative practices and progress during this social gathering.

9:30 am – 12:00 pm – Citizen Artist Summit Public Art(ist) Town Hall
The weekend concludes with a breakfast social and town hall conversation with a keynote by CETA artist and Mural Arts founder Jane Golden. Join community leaders Cheryl Mack and Renata B. Kowalczyk and elected officials as we consider the state of public art and the roles of citizen artists today. Additional panelists being confirmed.
