For our Festival of Broadcasting at Kelvin Hall we’re bringing you some extra special broadcasting themed CINE[STHESIA] screenings. We’ve collaborated with Solar Bear to select films and speakers for our first screening centered around Queer Identities in Broadcasting. This also marks LGBT History Month Scotland.
Included in the screening will be two key films from the Library’s Moving Image Archive LGBT collections – ‘Coming Out’; an STV documentary from 1983 that shows Scotland’s attitude towards homosexuality at the time, and ‘Highlanders Too’; a 1997 Channel 4 film that interviewed gay men in the Scottish Highlands about their experiences and double lives.
We’ll then show two recent films produced by Solar Bear that reflect queer experiences in Scotland today. Both will be introduced by the directors. Leah Francisco’s What is Wrong with Her?’, Winner of Best Scottish Short at the 2020 Scottish Queer International Film Festival, is a biographical poem filmed in her flat during lockdown and performed in British Sign Language. ‘Real Boy’ by Jamie Rea is an experimental documentary viewed through the mind of Joe Dunn exploring disconnection, anatomy, identification and chromosomes.

Join us on 8th February from 6pm to see this exciting programme.

Coming Out, 1983, 26 mins

More information on National Library of Scotland’s Festival of Broadcasting:
In 1923 Scotland’s first public radio broadcasts started the nation’s relationship with broadcasting which has gone on to play an integral part in people’s cultural interactions. As we arrive at the centenary of broadcasting in Scotland, it is an ideal moment to reflect on Radio and Television broadcasting in Scotland, past, present and future.
The National Library of Scotland’s Festival of Broadcasting is a celebration of the stories that have shaped our nation over the past 100 years. Our festival offers the opportunity to listen to and watch content from past, and to share memories about Scotland’s relationship with radio, television and internet broadcasting. Through exploring the different types of technology in our collections, we will showcase how broadcasting began in Scotland and how it has evolved to meet the needs of audiences in 2023.
Join us at our free events, talks and workshops running at Kevlin Hall throughout January – April 2023 and be a part of Scotland’s broadcasting story.
