SENTIMENTAL VALUE, the best international film of the year, is screening next Friday, December 5. Since we expect a full house, it's probably a good idea to buy the tickets online at www.cinemasavannah.com. To get you all excited about this remarkable film, here is the closing paragraph of the most thoughtful review of the film, written by Coleman Spilde for the recent issue of Salon.com, but, read the whole article only after seeing the movie.
"That Sentimental Value film will reach American audiences — who are already so divided and increasingly resolute in that division — right around the holidays, is blissfully fitting. Trier’s film overflows with the kind of genuinely impactful potential that we go to the movies for, the type that leaves us feeling understood more than it makes us feel good. Love and affection run past the margins, brushing up against shame and fear for a conclusion that’s akin to lingering a bit longer after a holiday dinner. Pour another cup of coffee, ask one more question, hear one more story, if only to understand each other a little better before we return to our own lives."
And if you got more time (like at least an hour) read an excellent story about Joachim Trier's career and his work on the film in the recent issue of New Yorker: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2025/11/10/joachim-trier-profile.
Box office opens at 6. Films start at 7 PM , tix are $10, cash preferred.

SENTIMENTAL VALUE (Norway, 2025)
A true marvel of cinema, Joachim Trier’s new film, a Cannes Festival Grand Prix winner, is a breathtaking and magically intimate exploration of family, memories, and the redemptive and reconciliatory power of art. It’s also, to me, the best foreign film of the year. If you missed it at SCAD Savannah Film Festival, here is another chance to see it on the big screen. Driven by supreme performances by the entire cast including Stellan Skarsgard, Renate Reinsve, and Elle Fanning, Sentimental Value will stay on your mind for as long as you have one.
Nora, a successful stage actress, reunites with her estranged father, Gustav Borg—a once-renowned film director planning a comeback with a script based on their family. When Gustav offers Nora the lead role, which she promptly declines, he turns his attention to a rising Hollywood starlet instead. In English and Norwegian with English subtitles. 132 minutes.
“Though it’s only two hours and 13 minutes long, Sentimental Value packs a whole novel’s worth of emotional texture and telling visual detail into that run time.” Slate
“The acting could not be better in this new film landmark spiked with laughs that can suddenly—or maybe not for hours or even days later—leave you choking with tears. “ Peter Travers (formerly of Rolling Stone)
“Sentimental Value gives the audience a sense that they’ve lived an entire life in the span of a single movie.” Movies for Grown Ups
“It’s a movie that sneaks up on you like great fiction, blending theme and character in a way that allows it to live in your mind after you see it, rolling around what it means to both the people in it and your own life.” RogerEbert.com
“A heart-swelling and unexpectedly humor-filled tale that will break you before it makes you whole again. You will leave the movie with a newfound gratitude for all that cinema can do.” Elle Magazine
“A layered masterpiece that The Worst Person in the World director Joachim Trier has been working toward for his entire career.” IndieWire
