CinemaSavannah is honored to host one of the earliest US screenings of NAZA, the most talked about and most important documentary of the year. Directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, last year’s Oscar winners for No Other Land, their new film, shot at night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv where the filmmakers interviewed 24 IDF soldiers, reveals in detail the systems behind Israel’s calculated mass killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. NAZA is a military acronym euphemistically used by Israeli intelligence to indicate the number of civilians that it expects will be killed in an airstrike.
The film won a Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival where it received a 25-minute standing ovation, the longest in the festival’s history. Produced and distributed by The Guardian (UK). 80 minutes. In Hebrew, English, and Arabic, with English subtitles.
“I've watched NAZA twice now, both times in a state of quiet horror and fury -- and with enormous admiration for Abraham and Szor's courage in holding their government to account. My admiration extends to the unerring precision of their filmmaking.” New Yorker/NPR
“The framing of the film then becomes a journalistic and cinematic coup, challenging us to begin to confront how easily societies (including our own) become complicit in ongoing violence.” The Seattle Times
“The unrelenting, unbearable horror described in NAZAis scale. Now, it’s industrial. That’s what makes it a genocide. It really is that unequivocal, and perhaps this is why the makers of NAZA didn’t need to use the word more than once.” The New York Times
“NAZA asks its audience not only to withstand 77 straight minutes of horrifying information about the senseless deaths of Palestinian men, women and children, but to feel their spirit in every last syllable, and hold onto it when we go.” Salon.com
“Without the promise of anonymity, of course, NAZA as a film wouldn't exist.” NPR
“As a work of cinema, it is exemplary. As a work of journalism, it is inarguable. As a document, it is an indictment.” Time Out
“NAZA is meant to be intolerable, but it’s also meant to state a truth many still do not wish to acknowledge, especially in our divided and fact-impaired times.” The Hollywood Reporter
