🎬 CINEAST 2026 OPENING FILM: FATHERLAND BY PAWEŁ PAWLIKOWSKI
We are proud to announce that our Opening Film is Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cannes Best Director winner, "Fatherland".
Following "Ida" and "Cold War", "Fatherland" marks the third chapter of Pawlikowski’s “post-war trilogy” – and promises to be a genuine cinematic event for cinephiles and film lovers alike.
🎞️ A country divided. A family divided. An uneasy return.
Set in 1949, "Fatherland" follows Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika as they travel across a Germany still scarred by war and divided between East and West.
Returning home after sixteen years of exile, Thomas Mann is confronted not only with a transformed country, but also with the fractures within his own family.
Their journey takes them from US-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar, in a black Buick crossing a Germany where the new divisions of post-war Europe are already taking shape.
🎬 FATHERLAND | Paweł Pawlikowski | Poland, Italy, Germany, France | 2026 | 82 min
🗣️ Mainly German with English subtitles
🏆 Best Director at Cannes 2026
With an intimate family story set against a continent in transition, Pawlikowski returns to themes that have long run through his work – exile, identity, family, love and guilt – in another precisely crafted portrait of people caught between places, loyalties and worlds.
Led by Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler and featuring August Diehl, Pawlikowski has assembled a truly remarkable cast for one of CinEast 2026’s most anticipated screenings.
Don't wait too long, since the amount of places in sale is limited
The Polish programme of CinEast is supported by Polish Film institute
