In 2013, Hamissi Mamba was separated from his wife, Nadia, when she fled Burundi to seek asylum in Detroit. While Nadia built a life for their soon-to-be-born twin daughters, Hamissi remained behind, waiting years before finally reuniting with his family. Trained in business with an MBA and experience as a sales and marketing manager, Hamissi arrived in Michigan eager to create opportunities not only for himself but also for his community. He and Nadia began envisioning a way to share the flavors of East Africa while building a new future for their family.

That vision became Baobab Fare, the celebrated restaurant they opened in 2021 after years of pop-ups, grant competitions, and overcoming pandemic delays. Today, Hamissi is at the forefront of expanding their growing culinary and cultural footprint in Detroit—with a second Baobab Fare location, Waka street food, and Soko, a lifestyle and consumer goods brand. Beyond food, Hamissi and Nadia are committed to hiring and empowering immigrants and refugees, many from Freedom House Detroit, where Nadia once stayed. Through his leadership and resilience, Hamissi is not only honoring Burundian heritage but also creating pathways for others to thrive.
