Afro-Cuban Jazz greats, pianist Chucho Valdés and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, reunite with Irakere 50, celebrating 50 years of the legendary band that changed the course of Latin music in the 70s and 80s

Two of the most influential figures in Afro-Cuban jazz, virtuoso pianist Chucho Valdés and trumpet icon Arturo Sandoval, reunite as part of Irakere 50, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary band that changed the course of Latin music in the 1970s and 80s, launched both of their stellar careers.
The winner of seven GRAMMY® Awards and four Latin GRAMMY® Awards, Chucho was already recognized as the most formidable pianist of his generation when he launched Irakere, including Sandoval and saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera. Introduced internationally by Dizzy Gillespie, the band’s unprecedented synthesis of folkloric Afro-Cuban rhythms, sacred drums, rock, funk, R&B, and jazz opened vast new musical frontiers. His influence on Afro-Cuban music is immeasurable.
A 10-time GRAMMY® Award winner and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, Arturo Sandoval has led a storied life and career. With dazzling technique and a multi-octave range, he is internationally revered as a jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player and renowned as a classical artist, pianist, and composer. He has been seen by millions at the OSCARS®, the GRAMMY Awards®, and the Billboard Music Awards, and has collaborated with a staggering list of greats
Along with these two giants, Irakere 50 is a showcase for a blazing new generation of hand-picked Cuban talent. Chucho says, “When I decided to do a tribute to that marvelous band, I also decided I didn’t want to do it with the charter members but with players from the generations of musicians that grew up and learned from Irakere. I thought it would be more meaningful. It’s a tribute from one generation to another.”
