There are bodies beneath San Francisco.
While the city famously banned burials in 1901 and banished its dead to Colma, human remains remain in San Francisco — including underneath famous landmarks like the Legion of Honor and United Nations Plaza.
Join the San Francisco Chronicle live at Manny’s on October 18 at 6 p.m. for a night of hauntings and strange history about the second lives of San Francisco’s dead. (Is the Chronicle archive haunted? You’ll find out!)
Chronicle Culture Critic Peter Hartlaub will speak with Beth Winegarner, author of “San Francisco’s Forgotten Cemeteries,” and share tales of spooky spots from his explorations of the city.
Plus, the Haunt Ghost Tours will tell the story of one of San Francisco’s most haunted sites.
“San Francisco’s Forgotten Cemeteries” will be available for sale.

Peter Hartlaub: Peter Hartlaub is the San Francisco Chronicle's culture critic and co-founder of Total SF. The Bay Area native, a former Chronicle paperboy, has worked at the Chronicle since 2000. He covers Bay Area culture, co-hosts the Total SF podcast and writes the archive-based Our SF local history column. Hartlaub co-created the Total SF podcast and event series, engaging with locals to explore and find new ways to celebrate San Francisco and the Bay Area.
Beth Winegarner: Beth Winegarner is a journalist, author, essayist and pop culture critic who’s contributed to the New Yorker, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Wired, Mother Jones, and many others. She is a former daily news reporter for the San Francisco Examiner and a former contributor to The San Francisco Chronicle. She is the author of several books, including San Francisco’s Forgotten Cemeteries: A Buried History, Sacred Sonoma, Beloved, The Columbine Effect: How Five Teen Pastimes Got Caught in the Crossfire and Why Teens are Taking Them Back, and Tenacity: Heavy Metal in the Middle East and Africa. She is a member of the Writers Grotto, based in San Francisco.
