About this Event

Chronic Pain & Illness
Guided Group Hypnosis in Downtown Toronto (to join virtually, please refer to the FAQ)

A guided group hypnosis session designed to help you reduce symptom-related distress, direct your attention more deliberately, and create more room in your life for comfort, meaning, and ordinary enjoyment.

Living with chronic pain or illness can require an enormous amount of attention.

You monitor symptoms. You anticipate difficult days. You make calculations about energy, movement, food, sleep, appointments, and plans. Even when nothing urgent is happening, part of your mind may remain on alert for the next change in how you feel.

Your symptoms are real and deserve appropriate care. At the same time, they do not have to occupy your entire field of attention or become the only lens through which you experience your life.

This session uses guided hypnosis to help you practise responding to your body with greater calm, reducing unnecessary internal struggle, and noticing what remains available to you alongside your condition.

This session may be especially helpful if you:

  • Live with persistent pain, discomfort, fatigue, or recurring physical symptoms
  • Become anxious or discouraged when symptoms intensify
  • Find yourself constantly monitoring how your body feels
  • Struggle to direct your attention away from discomfort
  • Feel that your condition has begun to dominate your identity
  • Experience frustration, resentment, grief, or fear about physical limitations
  • Become caught between pushing yourself too hard and avoiding too much
  • Want to feel more emotionally steady during difficult periods
  • Are looking for an additional coping practice alongside your existing care

What to Expect

The session begins with a brief introduction to the evening’s theme. Participants may suggest areas they would like addressed, such as pain-related tension, symptom monitoring, fatigue, frustration, fear of flare-ups, difficulty resting, medical uncertainty, or adjusting to changed abilities.

You will then be guided through a shared hypnosis experience centred on ideas such as:

  • Your symptoms are real without being the entirety of your experience.
  • You can listen to your body without monitoring it every moment.
  • Discomfort deserves care rather than panic, hostility, or self-blame.
  • You can reduce the additional tension created by fighting against every sensation.
  • Your attention can include comfort, capability, connection, and the outside world—not only symptoms.
  • A difficult day does not predict every day that follows.
  • Your worth and dignity remain intact when your abilities change.
  • Adaptation is not surrender; it is learning how to live intelligently within present circumstances.
  • You can make room for both physical difficulty and meaningful experience at the same time.

Depending on the needs of the group, the session may also address sleep disruption, fear of movement, frustration with limitations, uncertainty about the future, self-criticism, or communicating more compassionately with yourself during a flare-up.

The exact content varies slightly from one session to another, while the central purpose remains the same: helping you experience your condition as one part of your life rather than the whole of it.

A Different Relationship with Symptoms

Hypnosis does not require you to deny pain, pretend that you feel well, or believe that symptoms are “all in your head.”

Instead, it offers an opportunity to work with the parts of the experience that may be influenced by attention, expectation, emotional arousal, muscular tension, interpretation, and learned responses.

The goal is not to demand that your body change on command. It is to help you respond to your body in ways that create less additional distress and preserve more of your mental and emotional resources for living.

Some participants may use the session primarily for relaxation and coping. Others may find that changing their attention and responses affects how intensely certain symptoms are experienced. Individual responses vary.

Who Can Attend?

No previous experience with hypnosis is required. You may participate quietly, and you will not be required to disclose your diagnosis, symptoms, medical history, or personal circumstances to the group.

Each session stands on its own. You are welcome to attend once or return regularly to reinforce the ideas and apply them during different circumstances.

This event is intended as a complementary educational and experiential practice. It does not diagnose or treat medical conditions and should not replace medical assessment, Medic*tion, rehabilitation, psychotherapy, or other care recommended by your healthcare providers.

New, unexplained, rapidly worsening, or medically urgent symptoms should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional before being approached as a stress-management or hypnosis concern.
