MDS Gallery invites you to the opening of Chromatopography: Landscapes in Line and Color, a new exhibition by artist Vivi Torontali, on Saturday, May 3rd from 2–5 PM.
Chromatopography transforms topographic data into layered visual compositions, where mountains and volcanoes emerge through rhythm, repetition, and color. Each landscape is carefully traced creating distinct variations in density that reflect the unique character of each terrain.
In these works, line becomes a measured pulse and color a shifting atmosphere. A blue-to-white gradient evokes the oceanic depth of Milford Sound, while volcanic forms are rendered through earth-derived hues of ochre, red, and green. Mount Taranaki unfolds in a calibrated spectrum from deep violet to luminous white, and Mount Mansfield echoes seasonal transformation through layered tones inspired by autumn foliage, forest, and water.
Balancing the synthetic and the organic, the precise and the ethereal, Torontali’s process merges hand-traced linework with digital coloration. The result is a series of landscapes that feel both mapped and imagined—structured yet fluid, exact yet dreamlike.
Through repetition and variation, Chromatopography reveals the hidden rhythms of the earth, inviting viewers to experience terrain as something alive: breathing, flowing, and quietly pulsing.
