Chroma Keys: Film Density & Color Science
Kya Lou, Beverly Wood & Bradford Young in Conversation
Artist and filmmaker Kya Lou, Modern Ancient Brown Foundation’s Spring 2026 Fellow, gathers renowned cinematographer Bradford Young and legendary film chemist and laboratory executive Beverly Wood for a public discussion contextualizing the evolution of color sciences in motion picture.
Taking its name from the post-production process of chroma keying—the isolation and measurement of color values based on their purity or intensity—this conversation approaches color production, a practice key to shaping the overall aesthetic impact of celluloid and video signals, as an ecosystem of creative, scientific, and technical decisions. The speakers will also critically articulate the productive engagement with failure that occurs in film coloring processes.
Together, Lou, Wood, and Young assemble to demystify the grammar of color while centering the Black interlocutors—often invisibilized or obscured—who are responsible for its continued innovation. From an industry perspective, this conversation celebrates a commitment to multi-generational perspectives in a medium constantly decomposing itself.
