On May 1, 2024, the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, partnering with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, will hold a Community Access and Equity Fair at the State Armory in Hartford. This event will be an opportunity for the CHRO to present the findings and recommendations of the recently completed statewide Equity Study to the residents of Connecticut.The CHRO will work with community leaders to bring in residents from around the state, chartering buses to bring in residents from Waterbury, New Haven, Willimantic, Norwalk, Hartford, New Britain, East Hartford, Meriden, and Enfield. The fair will feature a morning of presentations from agency commissioners and representatives speaking to what their agencies are doing to try to increase community accessibility to their programs and services, as well as several panel discussions surrounding transparency and equity. Participants will be able to ask questions and provide feedback regarding agency operations.
After lunch provided by the organizers, participants will have the opportunity to visit booths set up by a huge variety of state agencies, local service providers and others to make sure participants have the ability to talk to a variety of people about signing up for state and local programs, what services they might be eligible for, and in what other ways government is here to work for them.
One of the clearest and most important findings from the Equity Study is that even when state agencies are making their best efforts, they often struggle to make connections with the populations in our state that most need the help of government programs. It is crucial to ensure that the recommendations coming out this study to improve these shortcomings reach the very communities we as state government are trying to serve. The Community Access and Equity Fair is an opportunity to bring government directly to the people.
