With the common thread of many a Christmas in Calcutta, the different centuries blend into each other as one walks through the precincts of the Dalhousie Square. As we dig in deeper, each of the centuries reveal their marks that have been left behind, leaving a trail of their respective stories and histories. In this walk, we will be exploring these trails and markers that continue to live in our very present, as the participants will be taken through a journey of Calcutta and its colonial past in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, talking about the different stories and experiences from those times. We will be beginning the walk in front of the Currency Building and will be ending it at The St. John's Church, talking of the other colonial structures that stand on the way. As we walk the streets we will explore the history of the Old Fort William and its eventual destruction and its intrinsic ties with the development of the city of Calcutta. We would also be visiting Job Charnock’s grave, a figure instrumental in changing the course of Calcutta’s history and looking at an 18th century painting by a celebrated European painter that talks of betrayal. This walk aims to engage the participants regarding the history and heritage of the city through storytelling, fun anecdotes while walking through these historical sites.
