Step back in time with local award-winning author Eddie Price as he shares how Christmas was celebrated in Colonial America—a far cry from today’s bright lights, decorated trees, and gift-filled stockings.
You’ll discover how European immigrants brought diverse traditions and beliefs, shaping holiday customs across the colonies:
New England Colonies: Puritans forbade Christmas celebrations—those caught showing holiday spirit could be fined five shillings.
Middle Colonies: Quakers treated it as an ordinary day, Presbyterians were hesitant, but Dutch and German settlers brought lively customs like baking, “Christmas pyramids,” and Saint Nicholas.
Southern Colonies: Feasts, dancing, hunting, visiting, church services, and decorations of holly, ivy, and mistletoe brought warmth to the winter season.
The program will also offer a peek into George Washington’s Mount Vernon Christmas, featuring diary entries and even the President’s gift list.
