Experience the wonder of Christmas in the 1800s and see what school was like during that time. Celebrate the season while stepping into history for a fun and memorable learning adventure.The classes are similar to a traditional 1880s school day in that the day includes lessons on slates, singing songs, lunch and outdoor games. We'll have a freshly cut Christmas tree in the classroom ready to be trimmed, and some old-fashioned fun ready to be enjoyed by all who participate. We'll hear the story about Christmas on the family farm circa 1880. Almost all the students dress up in time period clothing to make it more fun - feel free to dress up!
The Christmas class includes:
1. Recitation of Clement Moore’s, “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. The poem will be sent and lines will be divided among the students who will recite (or read) their individual lines during the recitation of the poem.
2. Christmas-themed spelling, vocabulary and penmanship lesson (Is it raindeer,
reindeer, or reindear?)
3. Christmas-themed arithmetic word problems
4. Trimming our classroom tree with handmade ornaments
5. Nativity skit – A simple skit will be done where simple costumes and props are encouraged. Memorized lines are optional, but lines will be assigned ahead of time, and scripts distributed.
6. Time period Christmas carol sing-a-long. Please have children bring an instrument along if they wish to accompany the singing or play a solo!
7.Christmas-themed spelling bee if time permits and lunch and recess.
We will be making ornaments and stringing popcorn and cranberries to decorate your tree at home.
For lunch we will bring a packed lunch and enjoy Christmas cookies and cider brought by parents if you wish to share with the group. Some children enjoy making authentic sugar or ginger cookies to share.
There is a gift shop cabinet full of time period souvenirs which is a favorite among parents wishing to purchase holiday gifts and stocking stuffers. Feel free to help yourselves while class is in session! (Bring cash or checks for it.)
This is a special event which has been very popular in the past and there are limited spots! Please be sure the youngest children are at least five years old. This is a drop off field trip given the size of the schoolhouse - please communicate with Rebeca if you absolutely need to stay. We will have very limited chaperones staying.
Cost: $ 12 per person (5 yrs old and up)
