Flutist Christian Paquette and guitarist Steve Cowan present a wonderful program that spans a range of musical styles, blending classical repertoire, contemporary sound worlds, and folk traditions. Béla Bartók’s “Roumanian Folk Dances” brings vibrant melodies and rhythmic energy, while Toru Takemitsu’s “Toward the Sea” (I. The Night, II. Moby Dick, III. Cape Cod) offers a serene and expansive soundscape inspired by the natural world. Claude Debussy’s Four Pieces adds contrast and character through “La fille aux cheveux de lin” for solo guitar, “Syrinx” for solo flute, “Rêverie,” and “Golliwog’s Cakewalk,” revealing the composer’s distinctive textures in a new light. The program also features “Folk Suite” by Canadian composer Jason Noble, alongside Osvaldo Golijov’s “Fish Tale,” an evocative exploration of sound and colour. Astor Piazzolla’s “Histoire du Tango” (I. Bordel 1900, II. Café 1930, III. Nightclub 1960) adds sharp rhythm, atmosphere, and passion. With Paquette’s expressive flute and Cowan’s precise guitar work, this performance highlights the intimate colour and contrast of their unique duo pairing.
