Sunday, June 27, 7pm at Trinity Reformed Church (101 Palouse RiverDr., Moscow, Idaho), the Christ Church choir, musicians, and friends
will present a concert of two choral works: Gabriel Fauré's Requiem
and a new cantata, music by Mark Reagan and text by Douglas Wilson. Concert admission is free.
The Requiem (“Grant them eternal rest”) is the traditional Roman
Catholic mass for the dead, often set with the Final Judgement and the eternal state of heaven in tension. By contrast, Fauré's lyrical
setting of the mass is a “Protestant-friendly” version in which the
sadness of the believer’s death ultimately turns to certainty and
comfort because he stands in the presence of God praising Him with gladness for eternity.
The cantata, Canto I from a larger work, Wilson’s paraphrase of Isaiah 40-48 and entitled And There Is None Beside. The cantata opens with an echo of familiar words of Isaiah 40:1-2, “Speak gentle words and glorious comfort comes/ so comfort all the wretched people here.” Similar to a Requiem, comfort and future judgement are themes developed in the text. The music sets the themes with similar keys and instrumentation as Fauré's Requiem.
