When jazz bands have occasionally incorporated the word “generations” into their name, the generations described tend to cluster at the far ends of the age spectrum. Chris Hovan’s band, which includes trumpeter Mark Russo and bassist Taylor Arbogast, are familiar players on the Northeast Ohio scene with varied and diverse backgrounds. With newest member Tim Mirth on guitar, this quartet makes the most out of the diverse experiences of its members while putting their stamp on familiar jazz repertoire and band originals. Having previously performed at The Bop Stop, Blu Jazz, Larchmere Arts, and Con Alma in Pittsburgh, Hovan’s Generations Quartet affirms the vitality of the jazz lexicon updated with a viable contemporary outlook.
