If the Hammond B-3 organ has a keeper of the flame in Kansas City, it's Chris Hazelton. A student of both Everette DeVan — KC's B-3 patriarch — and the legendary Dr. Lonnie Smith, Hazelton has spent two decades earning his billing as one of today's foremost Hammond organists: seven straight years of Soul Jazz Fridays at the Green Lady Lounge with his Boogaloo 7, featured chairs with The Freedom Affair and The James Hunter Six, and a teaching post at Kansas City Kansas Community College where his students learn on DeVan's own Hammond B-3.
Saturday night is a homecoming. Hazelton's new album In Rotation arrived this spring on Cellar Live, and this is the band that made it: Brett Jackson on tenor and baritone saxophone, Peter Schlamb on vibraphone, and John Kizilarmut on drums. No guitar — organ and vibes share the front line, a combination Plastic Sax calls "an uncommon variant of the organ jazz tradition," in a review that singles out the quartet's "breathtaking" reading of Billy Strayhorn's "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing." The book runs from Lee Morgan and Tadd Dameron to Hazelton originals and a tip of the hat to DeVan himself.
This is soul-jazz the way Kansas City has always liked it — grooving, generous, and played by a band fresh off the record. Two full sets in the city's most storied jazz room.
