*PLEASE NOTE THE EARLIER START TIME OF 7.30PM What a show we have for you in February! We’re delighted to welcome jazz guitarist, Chris ‘Santo’ Cobbson, taking us on a captivating musical journey, inspired by the music of Africa. It’s Chris Cobbson’s Jazz Afrika Quintet.
Chris ‘Santo’ Cobbson was born in Ghana and grew up in West London. Chris has performed with Osibisa, Courtney Pine, The JBs (Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley), Van Morrison, Monty Alexander, Andy Sheppard, Clifford Jarvis, Jean Toussaint, Ronnie Scott’s Big band, Shelia Ferguson, S.E Rogie, Gasper Lewal, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Jim Mullen, Ray Gelato, David Newton, Omar, Curtis Stigers, Imelda May, Ebony Steel Band and many others. He has played all over the world including festivals in South Africa, Singapore, Japan, Zanzibar, Dominica and Ghana. More recently Chris has been the guitarist in London’s Ivy Club house jazz trio, and he is a member of the Courtney Pine ‘House of Legends’ tour. He is also a prolific songwriter and arranger. His music is captivating, beautifully melodic, and rhythmically scintillating.
This evening, Chris will be fronting the show, presenting a wide range of jazz inspired by Africa. There will be songs written by artists from all around the continent, and some original compositions. Get ready for a unique jazz African journey, a party atmosphere and infectious music. You’ll find it hard to stay in your seats as the jazz-infused dance rhythms flow!
Joining Chris this evening, we have the energy and passion of Alex ‘Man of’ Steele on piano. Alex’s own musical journey has included performing and writing music with African musicians in Uganda, Kenya and Malawi. We have the beautifully melodic, lyrical, eloquent and effervescent, Mike ‘Moyk’ Green on double bass, and we have the mighty groove merchant, Mike Cypher on drums.
And there’s more! We’ve heard on the grapevine that there’s going to be a special guest in the house – awesome saxophonist and vocalist, Kim Cypher, long-time collaborator with Chris Cobbson.
So look forward to some guest appearances when you least expect them! Expect the unexpected! We’re looking forward to seeing you back at Smokey Joe’s for a very special evening of incredible music.
