Pianist and composer Chris Andrew is widely regarded as one of Canada’s leading voices in jazz. Known for his distinctive approach to the piano and a deeply personal musical language, Andrew has earned national recognition, including the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award. His ensemble, the Hutchinson Andrew Trio, received the prestigious TD Grand Jazz Award at the 34th Montréal International Jazz Festival.With a career spanning over 36 years, Andrew has recorded 15 albums as a leader or co-leader and has garnered seven Western Canadian Music Award nominations for Jazz Recording of the Year. In 2023, he served as musical director and composer for Wandering with Wonder, which won the AMPIA Rosie Award for Best Musical or Variety Program or Series.
In addition to his work as a bandleader, Andrew has appeared on over 70 recordings as a sideman and has toured extensively across Canada, with eleven national tours and international performances in Korea, Cuba, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, the United States, and Greece. His compositions have been featured in productions by Decidedly Jazz Danceworks and Alberta Dance Theatre, as well as in radio themes, television programs, and short films.
As a performer, Andrew has collaborated with an impressive range of artists, including Joshua Redman, Sonny Fortune, Dee Daniels, Melissa Aldana, Laila Biali, Audrey Ochoa, Christine Jensen, Bud Shank, Sherryl Sewepagaham, Pete Christlieb, Joe LaBarbera, P.J. Perry, Kirk MacDonald, Paquito D’Rivera, Brad Turner, and Steve Wallace. He has also performed with Jann Arden and Serena Ryder as part of Edmonton’s Leonard Cohen Festival. Closer to home, he has worked extensively with leading artists and ensembles such as Jens Lindemann, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Jump Orchestra, Maracujah, Bomba, and Tim Tamashiro.
Andrew is currently the Section Head of Piano at MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta, where he is deeply committed to music education. He is a strong advocate for the role of community in shaping artistic identity and cultural vitality.
Creatively, Andrew continues to expand his artistic output. He has recently completed recording his upcoming ensemble album Fracture Point (2027) and is preparing for a new recording project. He is also honoured to be collaborating with Honens as composer and performer for the upcoming production Oscar.
