Singers in the ChorWorks Young Artists Program, under the direction of the Chapel's Dr. Philip Cave, perform sacred music from the seventeenth century in Duke Chapel's towering Gothic sanctuary. Both a musician and a priest, the Italian baroque composer Claudio Monteverdi is celebrated for his 1610 compendium of Vespers music; this program presents the flowering of his sacred music compositions in his second anthology of Vespers music, "Selva Morale e Spirituale," written near the end of his life in 1641. The pieces-featuring soloists, chorus, and period instruments-are musical settings of traditional prayers from the Vespers and Mass services.
Admission is free.
Paid parking is available on a first come, first served basis in the Bryan Center Parking Lot at 125 Science Drive. ADA parking is available in the Bryan Center Surface Lot at the same address.
Masking in Duke Chapel is optional for those who are fully vaccinated. If you have not been vaccinated, Duke requires that you wear a mask in all Duke facilities. This is the second of two ChorWorks concerts featuring the music of Monteverdi. The other one is Friday, June 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Duke Divinity School's Goodson Chapel.
In association with Duke Chapel Music, the Chorworks Young Artists Program is taking place June 13-19 at Duke. This annual program is designed for musicians at the early stages of their professional careers, and provides training and performance opportunities with a focus on early music. This year's program is an in-depth exploration of the music of the Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643). Daily rehearsals and coaching are led by distinguished faculty, who will join the students in several performances open to the public.
