A distinctive feature of the Anglican tradition, Choral Evensong is the jewel of worship within the Anglican Communion. It is a service of sung Evening Prayer, taken from the Book of Common Prayer of 1662. It is a living tradition of the Church which has been practiced for centuries.
As is customary, the service is led by the choir who sing responses, canticles, an anthem, and psalms set for the day on behalf of those who attend. The congregation is invited to listen and immerse themselves in the meditative atmosphere of the music, instilling a silent, reflective, and personal offering of praise.
The service always includes one or more psalms. These ancient prayers from the Old Testament reflect the full range of human emotions and experiences, from the depths of anger, resentment, and abandonment to the heights of ecstatic joy and praise. They were used by Jesus and have always been at the heart of the Church's daily prayer.
Additionally, there are readings from the Bible and prayers are said for the Church, the world, and for ourselves.
