Candlemas, also known as the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, marks a milestone in the life of Jesus and the church year. We are celebrating it with Choral Evensong with special guest choir from the St. James' Cathedral. After the service, the Bishop of Niagara, the Right Rev'd Susan Bell, will give a talk on the Anglican poet, George Herbert.
Herbert (1593-1633) was an Anglican priest who became famous after his death for his poetry and prose. Many of his works have been set to music, including the well known hymns "Let All the World in Every Corner Sing," "King of Glory, King of Peace," "Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life," "Teach Me, My God and King," which can all be found in our red hymn book (#2, #195, #261 and #268).
Bishop Bell, a Herbert scholar, served as Chaplain at Havergal College, Canon Missioner of the Diocese of Toronto, and Associate Priest of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, before being elected Bishop of Niagara in 2018.
