St. John’s Cathedral Choir presents Choral Evensong this Sunday, April 23rdOrgan prelude begins at 4:45 with the service of evensong to follow immediately.
The service will include Psalm 108, Martin Neary Responses, Charles Villiers Stanford’s Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in B-flat, and the anthem "Draw us in the Spirit’s tether" by Harold Friedell. Hymns include Thomas Tallis’s "The Eighth Tune" and Richard Wayne Dirksen’s "Hilariter."
The organ prelude will be performed by music director Jason Overall and will include excerpts of Louis-Nicolas Clérambault’s Suite du deuxième ton and Naji Hakim’s early masterpiece The Embrace of Fire. Hakim’s three movement sonata is a meditation on the famous Trinity icon by Andrei Rublev and on plainsong melodies associated with Eucharistic themes. This 1986 work largely earned Hakim recognition as a successor to Jean Langlais and Olivier Messiaen.
A festive reception will follow where the congregation may greet the choir. Parking is free in the lot adjacent to the Cathedral as well as on-street parking spots. The service will also be broadcast live on YouTube (channel SJCKNOX) and archived for future viewing.
We hope you will join us for the final Evensong of our 2022–2023 season.
