CHIPS (Christian International Peace Service)
CHIPS is a charity based in Brixton that uses a holistic approach to address serious youth violence through preventative and curative activities.
Through collaborative, community-led initiatives, there exists the potential to cultivate resilience and foster positive outcomes within these underserved neighbourhoods.
Our approach is structured around four distinct outcome areas, each of which comprises a range of activities designed to empower and support young people, strengthen families, foster community cohesion, and build bridges with statutory organisations.
1. Empowering young people to achieve their potential.
The majority of CHIPS’ youth-related activities are preventative and aim to provide young people with the skills and experiences to reduce their likelihood of involvement in youth violence. Our mentoring activities through one-to-one mentoring and YEC are most likely to intervene with young people already caught up in violent activity.
a) Youth Experience Club (YEC)
Co-founded and produced with the young people who attend the sessions, YEC offers a safe and enriching space for young people after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. The sessions are tailored to introduce participants to new experiences, such as the Brunch Brothers course focusing on behaviour and emotional awareness, robotics workshops, and photography and video classes. Additionally, designated drop-in sessions provide opportunities for informal mentoring by youth workers, fostering personal development and positive social interactions.
b) Trips off Endz
Many young people in our community have limited exposure to activities beyond their immediate environment. Trips off Endz endeavours to address this by organising outings to various attractions in London, including Thorpe Park, trampoline parks, ice skating rinks, museums, and theatres. These excursions also facilitate personal growth and peer bonding as young people open up more in a different setting.
c) Peer Mentoring
In addition to support from adult staff and volunteers, CHIPS has established a peer mentoring program wherein older youth (aged 17-23) mentor younger ones (aged 11-15). This initiative not only fosters leadership skills among older participants but also creates a supportive network spanning different age groups, thereby expanding the support system available to young individuals.
d) STEP Dance Mentoring in schools
CHIPS uses a combination of dance workshops, group mentoring and 1-to-1 mentoring to support children in years 5 and 6 who have been identified as having challenging behaviour and on the verge of exclusion. This targeted intervention aims to address underlying issues and provide positive outlets for expression and personal development.
