Join Cadence K9's owner and head dog trainer Chelsea Morales and the community for a free Pack Walk through Chino Creek Wetlands and Educational Park.
What is a Pack Walk? A Pack Walk is a well-organized and controlled group of dogs that are on leashes keeping a safe distance from one another while moving in the same direction. They are close enough to experience positive passing interactions with other dogs but far enough away so they don’t physically interact.
Why do a Pack Walk? Migrating together is instinctually satisfying and an ideal method of socialization for your dog. In this way even the most nervous dogs learn to bond in a calm and healthy way because they are mentally engaged and focused on tasks such as matching pace, maintaining position, and taking in the environment. Structured dog walking is safer than the off-leash settings of dog parks or the typical nose-to-nose or butt-sniffing greetings and a great way to get some exercise while slowly acclimating them to new people and friends with set boundaries. Psychologically, this makes our dogs work together as a team rather than having a competitive mindset.
Location: The Pack Walk will take place at the Chino Creek Wetlands and Educational Park. We will be meeting in the parking lot off the Kimball Ave. entrance. Typing the coordinates into most major GPS services will give you the exact meeting location (33.967570,-117.678290). The trail consists of small rock/gravel lining which is comfortable for most dogs but feel free to bring dog shoes if preferred. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water for yourself and your dog as there are only a few water fountain areas along the trails. Shade is intermittent but we plan on taking at least one break at the amphitheater area of the park. Our Pack Walk will be an out-and-back style hike. Depending on trail closures and weather temperature, the Pack Walk will be anywhere between 1-2 miles and last 30-60 minutes.
Who’s Invited? This event is open to the community and free - simply register at https://www.cadencek9.training/events and show up! If inviting others outside of this event post, we ask that you please share our safety protocols. There should be no running, loud noises, or other horseplay happening during the Pack Walk as this can have a negative impact on timid dogs. Children are welcome at the Pack Walk but they should be old enough to understand how to safely behave around unfamiliar dogs. If bringing children, please have an additional guardian present. Do not allow children to pet or distract unfamiliar dogs.
All dog breeds, sizes, ages, and levels of socialization are welcome. In fact, Pack Walks are a great way to rehabilitate reactive or over/under-socialized dogs. Feel free to reach out to event hosts for tips and advice. Muzzled dogs are welcomed - as long as you are following the safety protocols and the muzzle is well-fitted and breathable. Muzzled dogs should not be criticized by other attendees as we support and celebrate owner efforts to expose their dogs to safe and controlled experiences like this Pack Walk.
Ribbon Rules:
When you arrive, pieces of ribbon will be available for you to tie on your dog’s leash for others to see. It is advised to take all colors available in case you notice your dog’s demeanor change on the Pack Walk.
* Green - Dog is consistently friendly with all dogs and does not require as much space. Physical greetings will still be prohibited during the walk.
* Yellow - Dog is cautious and anxious toward other dogs and requires space of at least 3 feet or more.
* Red - Dog is reactive or very nervous toward other dogs and requires space of at least 5 feet or more.
Displaying a ribbon on your dog’s leash is optional. If you see a dog without a ribbon displayed on their leash, assume the rules for the Red ribbon.
Safety Protocols:
* No nose-to-nose, nose-to-butt, or any other physical contact of dogs during the Pack Walk - After the walk is over, this requirement will be lifted but permission must be asked and all involved parties must consent. Ribbon rules will still apply before, during, and after the Pack Walk.
* Must have positive control over your dog - Pay attention to your dog and their surroundings! Keep dogs on a shorter leash and do not allow them to invade another dog or human’s space.
* 4 to 6 foot standard leashes only - Make sure your gear is well-fitted and in good condition. NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES - between the easily breakable locks and nature to tangle, these leashes tend to be unsafe for dogs and humans alike, especially in this setting.
* No female dogs in heat
* Dogs should be in good health and up to date on vaccines and other veterinary requirements
* All poop must be picked up immediately
* All dogs must remain on leash before, during, and after the Pack Walk
* Be mindful of food - You are more than welcome to bring training treats to help motivate and reward your dog. For the safety of all involved, humans should refrain from eating people food during the walk.
As a reminder this is a public event in a public space. By attending, you are agreeing to hold hosting parties harmless and assume liability for your actions and the actions of your dog(s) at all times.
