About this Event
[Chinese New Year Special] The Hokkien New Year - Who is Jade Emperor?
This event is your chance to learn all about the Heavenly Jade Emperor and the significance of the Hokkien New Year!
The Chinese believes that the Jade Emperor is the highest deity in the Taoist pantheon and he is the benevolent Ruler of the Universe. Annually, on the 9th Day of the first lunar month of the Chinese Calendar, it is widely known that it is the birthday of the Heavenly Jade Emperor; however, devotees start their celebration and prayers as early as on the night of the 8th, at 11pm sharp till the wee hours of the next day.
The Jade Emperor's Birthday, also known as Thnee Kong Seh or Thee Kong See in Hokkien, or even simply Bai Tian Gong (i.e to Praying The Jade Emperor) is a significant event in Taoism. Many Chinese places more emphasis and importance on this day over the Chinese Lunar New Year; and expecially for the Hokkiens, who claim this day as their Hokkien New Year. This has to do with the history of the Hokkiens, successfully survived from the evasion and attacks of their enemies in the sugar cane plantations.
Hence, the Jade Emperor's Birthday is a time for reflection, gratitude, and seeking blessings. Devotees pray for good health, prosperity, and protection from harm. As Hokkien are the main denomination of the Singaporean Chinese, Thnee Kong Seh is still widely observed locally. However, not known to many, Thnee Kong Seh is not only observed by the Hokkiens but many other Chinese dialect groups too. Celebrations in different part of the world varies, and join us as our guides share more with you.
