About this Event

Fan Dance for Beginners Class

Introduction

Chinese Fan Dance is a graceful and expressive traditional Chinese dance form, deeply rooted in classical and folk performance traditions. Characterised by the use of colourful silk fans, the dance blends fluid, lyrical movements with precise hand and arm techniques, creating elegant visual patterns that symbolise beauty, harmony, and storytelling.

This workshop introduces participants to the foundational skills of Chinese Fan Dance: basic body alignment, fan handling, simple rhythmic patterns, and introductory choreography. No previous dance experience is required. The course welcomes anyone interested in Chinese traditional dance, embodied expression, or East Asian performance culture.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate proper body posture and alignment fundamental to Chinese Fan Dance.

• Master basic fan handling techniques, including opening, closing, and manipulating the fan with control.

• Perform simple, flowing movement sequences and rhythmic patterns specific to the dance form.

• Understand the cultural context and symbolic meaning behind key movements in Chinese Fan Dance.
