New Children & Youth Programs Afterschool Course: Chinese Classics for Children
About this Event

In sixteen sessions, students will study texts from Chinese classics designed for children, such as San Zi Jing (《三字经》), as well as poems from Tang and Song dynasties from 7th to 14th Century. Effectively in practice for nearly over one thousand years, these carefully selected texts and poems are highly relevant today as they convey age-appropriate ancient wisdom of universal values such as the importance of the nature and societal relations; cultivating kindness, diligence and virtues; and appreciation of poetic and artistic expressions as basic human needs. Students will be guided to read aloud the classics in rhyme to explore the musical aspect of Chinese language. In addition, students will be exposed to calligraphy and brush painting when practicing writing characters and visualizing meanings.

The course will be led by Dr. Weini Zhao (赵维妮), former professor of Chinese history at Sichuan University, visiting scholar at Harvard-Yenching Institute of Harvard University, and the Center for East Asian Study at Stanford University. In addition to her academic researches concerning history, rituals and religion in pre-modern China, Dr. Zhao has life-long passion of practicing Chinese brush painting and calligraphy.

Students ages between 6 to 13 years old are welcomed to enroll the course of 16 sessions, 1.5 hours for each session. Previous Chinese language learning experience will be helpful, but not required.
