A multi-disciplinary performance and community conversation
About this Event

October 24 marks the 150th anniversary of the L.A. Chinatown Massacre. That lynching of around twenty Chinese Americans by a mob of nearly 500 people is still considered one of the worst race riots on the West Coast. For the past three years, Hao Huang, Scripps’ Bessie and Cecil Frankel Chair in Music, has explored this little-known history through performances around Southern California and with a widely acclaimed spring 2021 podcast, “Blood on Gold Mountain.” Now Prof. Huang, in collaboration with musicians Yan-Jie Micah Huang, Emma Gies, Chi-Wei Lo, Xiaopei Xu, Scripps Associate Professor of Dance Kevin Williamson, members of the Claremont Shogo Taiko group, and local Claremont body movement artist Young-Tseng Wong will address this devastating past and its current resonance with the topic of race in America. We invite students, faculty, and staff from The Claremont Colleges to join them for a multi-disciplinary performance and community conversation.

This program is presented in partnership with the Scripps Dean of Faculty , the IDEA Initiative, Pacific Basin Institute at Pomona College , and sponsored in part by University of California Los Angeles Chancellor’s Arts Initiative, UCLA Asian American Studies Center, UCLA Asia Pacific Center, and the Chinese American Museum.

Scripps College prioritizes the health and safety of its community members and is following the guidance of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health for outdoor gatherings. Adherence to these guidelines will be strictly enforced during the event.
