Deep in the Kashmir Valley on the banks of the Jhelum River at the junction of lakes Indus, Dal, and Anchar lays the charming city of Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Packed with walnut carving workshops, pashmina factories, plum-cake bakeries, and leafy gardens of royal heritage, it’s the Venice of the East in the Vale of Kashmir!
India controls about half the area of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir while Pakistan controls a third of the region, divided among the two provinces of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Administered as union territories by India, Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh formed a single State in August 2019 after its limited autonomy was revoked.
The Mughal Gardens of Srinagar, on the short-list for World Heritage status, wind their way through the city and around the lakes, with endless vistas of leafy gardens, shallow terraces and falling waters, wide canals of calm reflections broken only be the stepping-stones across the streams. With names like the Royal Fountains, the Palace of Fairies, and the Garden of Spring, you’ll think you were transported into the Mughal Dynasty.
The artistic side of Srinegar will have you touring the delicate carvings of walnut artisans, tasting the world-famous plum cakes of the city’s many local bakeries, trying on pashminas from the factory floor, and pondering the poems of Rumi while you soak in the Sufi vibes drifting along canals in your houseboat.
