About this Event

Most children's art classes are run by teachers. This one is run by working artists.

Ash Lab is a studio first — we exhibit, we sell work, and we prepare older students for art school portfolios. The children's class comes out of that same practice, which means your child is taught the way artists actually learn to see: by looking hard at something real, and drawing it.

That doesn't make it serious or joyless. Five-year-olds draw animals and invent characters. Twelve-year-olds tackle perspective and shadow. Nobody sits through a lesson pitched at someone else's level.

**How it works**

Classes are capped at 8, grouped by age and ability. Every child works on their own piece at their own pace, and gets individual feedback every session — not a demonstration at the front of the room. Over a term they'll work through:

- Drawing from observation — the skill everything else rests on

- Animals and the natural world

- Characters, and telling a story in pictures

- Perspective and composition

- Light, shadow and texture

- Pencil, coloured pencil and mixed media

- Their own projects, taken further than they expect

**Who teaches**

Le trained in fine art in Wuhan and holds a master's from the Glasgow School of Art. His work has been shown at the London Art Biennale, the Affordable Art Fair London and Glasgow International, and he's been shortlisted for the British Art Prize and the BADA Art Prize. Yuki studied art in both China and the UK. Between them they also teach our Foundation and art school portfolio students.

**Practical bits**

- 1.5 hours, Saturdays

- Ages 5–15, beginners very welcome

- Maximum 8 children per class

- All materials provided — paper, boards, easels, media. Bring a sketchbook and pencil if you have them.

- Drop-off is fine; you're also welcome to stay, especially for a first session

- Free parking on site. The bus stop is at our door — Lothian 12, 26 and 31, directly opposite Edinburgh Zoo, about 15 minutes from Haymarket.

Work goes home every session, and we keep a folder for each child so you can see a term's progress laid out at the end.
