Everyone is invited to The Tonganoxie Community Historical Society 4th Tuesday Meeting.Topic: Children of the Promised Land
The Tonganoxie Community Historical Society will host Angela Bates. Angela is the Executive Director and Past President of the Nicodemus Historical Society. Nicodemus is the oldest and only remaining town west of the Mississippi River that was established in 1877 by African-Americans during Reconstruction after the Civil War. The town is a National Historic Site.
This program will focus on the unique experience of mothers and their children in Nicodemus, some of whom were the first members of their families to be born free. The presentation will explore the dynamics of mothers and their children and the contrast of life and decisions based on the concept of “choice,” which freedom now allowed.
The meeting begins at 7 with a brief business meeting followed by the historical program.
Refreshments will be served after the program.
This program is sponsored by Humanities Kansas.
